Applying Effective Math Instruction to the Fully-Online Space: An Overview of Carnegie Math Pathways’ New Fully-Online Courses

Digital learning is increasingly becoming critical to higher education institutions’ sustainability. However, failure and incompletion rates in online courses remain high especially for students traditionally placed into developmental mathematics.

That’s why the Carnegie Math Pathways is designing a new approach to online learning. In partnership with faculty across our network, as well as key technology partners, we have reimagined our in-person Quantway and Statway courses for the online space to bring a collaborative, adaptive, and supportive online learning experience for our students.

Which Model is Right for Students? An Exploration of the Carnegie Math Pathways Offerings and What We’ve Learned From Their Implementation

Math pathways offer institutions a variety of implementation options, which can be used to support different areas of study and the diverse needs of students. Yet, with the proliferation of options, it may be more difficult to know what kinds of math pathways models work best and under what circumstances, to support student success.

Since 2010, the Carnegie Math Pathways has expanded beyond our traditional Quantway and Statway year-long pathway to also offer a suite of 1- and 2-term course options that include accelerated implementation and corequisite models. Applying design principles of active pedagogy, relevant curriculum, and social-emotional supports that have contributed to the success of our original course models to these new offerings, we’re continuing to see impressive success rates. And we’re also learning valuable lessons along the way.

Join us for an overview of each of the offerings available and what we’ve learned about what works from different implementations to help you consider which offerings may best serve your students.

Students should graduate from high school prepared for success in college and ready to meet their education and career goals. However, there is increasing recognition that the traditional high school mathematics course sequence is a barrier to opportunity for many students, particularly historically disadvantaged students, and that new ideas are needed to improve students’ mathematical readiness for post-secondary education. This webinar will present innovations being implemented in a variety of contexts that provide alternative pathways for students to successfully transition to and through college.

Phil Daro and Harold Asturias will discuss their new report from Just Equations, Branching Out: Designing High School Math Pathways for Equity, highlighting how alternative high school math pathways can provide students with mathematics opportunities that are better aligned with the diversity of careers that today’s graduates enter into and ensure more equitable outcomes. Max Altman from McREL/REL Pacific will share the work they have done with high school-college partnerships in the Pacific Islands developing and implementing high school transition courses that are adapted to local needs and community values. Finally, Elizabeth Texeira and Yovanny Vargas will present on how the Rhode Island Department of Education is spearheading efforts to bring high schools and institutions of higher education together across the state to improve college readiness with high school transition courses and related wrap-around services.

This webinar will be informative to K-12 and higher education participants alike. We encourage high school and college partners to attend the webinar together to seed conversations about implications for their students.
