Seven Habits of Highly Successful Change Leaders in Higher Education

Learn the findings of a five-year NSF funded study conducted by the presenters and Carnegie Math Pathways via a National Science Foundation grant examining the impact of executive coaching on change management and leadership in higher education. The presentation reviews seven common traits of successful leaders with institutional examples and suggestions for implementation. We’ll discuss how leaders can create their own framework for successful change management that can be applied to implement change initiatives effectively and sustainably at scale.

Digital Literacy in Adult Education – Virtual Panel

Digital equity is defined as a condition in which all individuals and communities have the information technology capacity needed for full participation in society. Adult education programs help individuals develop their literacy, numeracy and language skills. In this symposium we suggest that digital literacy needs to be an essential component of adult education programs as well. Many programs do not have staff capacity to teach classes that are only on digital literacy. One possible solution is to integrate digital literacy instruction into other content that is being taught. The papers in this symposium describe the efforts that are underway to understand the digital literacy needs of adult learners and ways to integrate digital literacy into different types of content instruction.

Adult Mathematics Teaching and Learning with Technology: The State of the Field

This session shares findings from a deep scan of current knowledge and practice about adult mathematics education using technology. The Adult Numeracy in the Digital Era project undertook this scan to learn from research, practitioner knowledge, and “on-the-ground” learning experiences to inform the project’s instructional design and provide the field with insights about evidence-based approaches and practices. This session engages participants in the scan process, findings, and implications for their programs, courses, and instruction.

The Adult Numeracy in the Digital Era Project: A Technology-Enabled Mathematics Course For Adult Learners

This session engages participants in a new technology-enabled mathematics course developed in the IES-funded Adult Numeracy in the Digital Era (ANDE) project. The course utilizes relevant, contextualized mathematics content; collaborative learning; adaptive mathematical supports; digital literacy supports; and social-emotional interventions promoting self-efficacy and sense of belonging. Participants will engage in course activities, and reflect on implications of the curricular and instructional design for their instruction. Results of usability and pilot testing will be shared.

CREATE Adult Skills Network Panel

The Collaborative Research for Educating Adults with Technology Enhancements (CREATE) Adult Skills Network, a federally funded research and development initiative, will help to address the needs of adult learners by building and investigating technology-enabled instruction and assessment. During this session, the Network teams provide updates on their projects and share initial findings from development and testing.

Presentation at the 2023 AACC Annual Conference

Build Leadership Capacity While Scaling Institutional Improvements

Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC)  and Carnegie Math Pathways (CMP) partnered to examine methods to build leadership capacity while scaling institutional improvements. A National Science Foundation grant helped teams to scale their CMP implementation supported with coaching on change management and leadership development focused on organizational improvement. 

Within three years and during the global pandemic, MATC successfully transformed  developmental math programs, growing enrollment and increasing student success. Hear MATC’s leaders’ perspective on building leadership capacity while scaling institutional improvements at a large diverse urban institution.

Championing Practices for Scaling Implementation of Developmental Math Reform

Mathematics pathways have proven to be promising approaches to addressing the challenge of math serving as a barrier for postsecondary students. Despite evidence of their effectiveness, these efforts are still facing challenges as it pertains to their spread and scale. Our paper seeks to examine the work of actors in two- and four-year colleges who champion math pathways in their institutions. We examine championing practices to understand how actors advocate for the scaling of math pathways at their college and whether or not these practices are successful. Our findings surface four championing practices that these actors engage in, and reveal how these champions draw on their institutions’ structure, policies, processes, and practices to resource efforts to scale math pathways.

Fire Circles on Undergraduate Mathematics Education Research with Indigenous Communities

We invite educators who serve Native students and communities to join us for an engaging scholarly working group focused on undergraduate mathematics education with Indigenous communities.  Together we will explore how institutions and structures historically and currently operate at the national, state, and local levels to create and perpetuate injustice and inequality for Indigenous communities in the United States. We will then engage in studying how our research commitments and practices can disrupt those injustices and inequalities.

The working group session will be broken into three segments:

  1. In the first segment, attendees will learn about our collaboration leading to the Fire Circles, a community-led process for learning about mathematics teaching and learning that centers Indigenous communities and affirms four commitments, Relationality, Responsibility, Respect, and Reciprocity (Brayboy & Deyhle, 2000).
  2. During the second segment, we will engage in small Fire Circle discussions around themes that attendees propose as relevant. 
  3. In the last segment, we will plan ways to advance our collective work in the remainder of the year along agreed upon objectives that may include: a research commentary, a grant proposal submission to support the work, the launch of continued conversations and Fire Circles throughout the year, collaboration in empirical work, etc.
