Mathematics pathways have proven to be promising approaches to address barriers for postsecondary students. Despite their effectiveness, these efforts face challenges as it pertains to their scale. We seek to examine how actors champion math pathways in their institutions. We examine leadership practices to understand how actors advocate for the scaling of math pathways. We identified two leadership practices that these actors engage in, and reveal how these leaders resource efforts to scale math pathways.

Championing Practices for Scaling Implementation of Developmental Math Reform

Despite evidence of the effectiveness of math pathways in postsecondary education, these pathways have been challenging to scale. We seek to examine the practices of actors in postsecondary institutions who aim to implement and scale math pathways. We surface tracking and leveraging as central practices in implementation and scaling efforts.

Seven Habits of Highly Successful Change Leaders in Higher Education

Learn the findings of a five-year NSF funded study conducted by the presenters and Carnegie Math Pathways via a National Science Foundation grant examining the impact of executive coaching on change management and leadership in higher education. The presentation reviews seven common traits of successful leaders with institutional examples and suggestions for implementation. We’ll discuss how leaders can create their own framework for successful change management that can be applied to implement change initiatives effectively and sustainably at scale.

Build Leadership Capacity While Scaling Institutional Improvements

Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC)  and Carnegie Math Pathways (CMP) partnered to examine methods to build leadership capacity while scaling institutional improvements. A National Science Foundation grant helped teams to scale their CMP implementation supported with coaching on change management and leadership development focused on organizational improvement. 

Within three years and during the global pandemic, MATC successfully transformed  developmental math programs, growing enrollment and increasing student success. Hear MATC’s leaders’ perspective on building leadership capacity while scaling institutional improvements at a large diverse urban institution.
