In this working group we want to (re)convene researchers and educators interested in understanding the scope of research that can be pursued with Indigenous communities on aspects of mathematics teaching, learning, curriculum, and professional development. A secondary goal of this group is to develop a network of scholars who are interested in advancing research on these areas and who are pursuing or planning to start projects with a focus on Indigenous communities in the United States, the Americas, and internationally. This year’s iteration of the working group will continue to integrate the contexts of Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) into research on mathematics education.

This paper presents implementation and impact results from a rigorous study of an innovative statistics corequisite remediation course for community college students. The treatment course, Statway Corequisite, includes robust teacher training and lessons with real world contexts and pedagogical routines that promote collaboration and positive student mathematical mindsets. The comparison business-as-usual corequisite course was developed by the partner community college. Using data from eight terms, students in Statway Corequisite (a) had significantly higher course grades (2.65 vs. 1.91, effect size = 0.51, p <0.001) and (b) were much less likely to withdraw or earn a D, F, or incomplete grade (DFWI) compared to the standard college course (p <0.001).

The missions and values of tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) reflect the roles that TCUs play in empowering educational sovereignty. In the contexts of mathematics education, TCUs have been innovative in providing mathematical educational learning experiences that draw on the brilliance of Indigenous peoples. However, these success stories are not reflected in the research literature. Furthermore, there has been a need for mathematics educators at TCUs to build community and work towards a collective future of mathematics at TCUs. This session will provide a summary of current trends in mathematics education at TCUs in the form of a literature review, landscape analysis, and promising practices. Understanding these current trends provides a basis for envisioning the role that TCUs can play in reshaping the future of mathematics education for Indigenous communities.
