About the Session

How can high schools and colleges collaborate to better align teaching and learning to prepare students for success in college math? In this session, two high school-college partnerships will share the design of and lessons learned from the implementation of high school transition courses, courses designed in partnership with Carnegie Math Pathways to provide seniors at risk of requiring remediation in college with a robust conceptual understanding of foundational mathematics and academic dispositions and skills that will help them succeed in college.

Participants will learn about

• Instructional design of HS transition courses
• Implementation models in different contexts
• How HS-College partnerships are created and maintained, including issues regarding -inter-segmental coordination
• Effectiveness of courses in improving readiness for college mathematics

In this session, three innovative leaders describe how they reformed mathematics as the centerpiece of their guided pathways transformation and increased completion as a result. Responding to economic imperative, and in some cases legislative demand, these educators have brought transformative change to scale. Hear their challenges, triumphs, and lessons learned.

Students believing that they are capable of learning, that they belong, and their use of effective strategies are all key to their academic success. During this workshop, participants learn about support efforts that increase students’ productive persistence and can be integrated into courses through “starting-strong” and “staying-strong” activities. Participants reflect on common classroom experiences using a shared framework and adapt practical routines that promote and sustain academic mindsets in their classrooms. Gain hands-on experience with evidence-based interventions designed to create and maintain a classroom culture that supports students’ productive persistence.

What can be done to transform the mathematics gatekeeper into a mathematics gateway? One initial step to making math learning more meaningful to students’ lives is implementing math pathways. With the support of Carnegie Math Pathways, many tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) have introduced math pathways, as well as holistic changes to instruction that engage students with active instructional methods, real-world-based curriculum that focuses on problem-solving, and integrated student supports.

Join us for a session that will feature case studies from faculty at two such tribal college campuses. The information and examples shared in this session will provide participants with useful ideas and strategies that they may use or adapt to improve their course structures and instruction in their own classrooms.
