In partnership with Red Lake Nation College, we are excited to invite you to the 2025 TCU-Carnegie Math Pathways Network Convening in Minneapolis, MN

At the Marriott City Center, Downtown Minneapolis

Friday, September 19th, 9:00am to Sunday, September 21st, 9:00am

Event Highlights:

  • Enriching sessions centered on math teaching and learning and student supports at TCUs 
  • A spotlight on developments from our faculty working groups and TCU Research Fellows
  • A tour of Red Lake Nation College’s Minneapolis site

Keynote: Dr. Kory Czuy, ᒥᐦᑯᐱᐦᐁᓯᐤ

Image of Dr. Kori CzuyDr. Czuy is Métis/Polish, born in Treaty 8 by the banks of the Peace River, with Ancestral ties to the Jobin Family of Big Prairie. She has been working in education for over 20 years and Indigenous Science/Mathematics pedagogy and methodologies for over a decade. Her PhD was in storying mathematics, embracing the depth of mathematics within the knowledge of the Land and Community.

She is currently the Manager of Indigenous Science at the Spark Science Centre in Calgary Alberta (Mohkinstsis), focusing on weaving together multiple ways of knowing, being, and doing science. Kori is also the Host and Producer of the Podcast “Ancestral Science,” teaches “Indigenous Science” at the University of Calgary, and is an Indigenous Science Pedagogy Consultant.

Kori is on an ongoing journey to reconnect with and learn from the knowings of the Land, Cosmos, and Spirit and their “origins” within science.

Network Reception
We are hosting a network reception at the hotel on Friday, Sept. 19th at 5:45 – 6:45pm. Join us for remarks from Red Lake Nation College President, Dan King, hearty hor’dourves, and good conversation. 

Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Guardians 
Relax and enjoy Friday night at the ballpark as the Twins face off against the Guardians at Target Field! This optional outing begins at 7:10pm on Friday, Sept. 19th and is great way to connect informally with peers and enjoy a classic Minneapolis experience. (Participant tickets will be purchased by Carnegie Math Pathways.)

Group Dinner at Owamni
Join us Saturday, Sept. 20th at 6pm for an optional group dinner at Owamni, a celebrated Indigenous restaurant on the banks of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis. Created by The Sioux Chef, Owamni’s menu features pre-colonial ingredients and traditional Native American cooking techniques. The restaurant offers a unique cultural and culinary experience that centers Indigenous identity and innovation.

2024 TCU-Carnegie Math Pathways Network Convening

Join us this fall for the 2024 TCU-Carnegie Math Pathways Network Convening in Tucson, AZ!

September 13 – 15

At the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort

Pre-Conference – Friday, September 13th, 9:00am – noon

Main Conference – Friday, September 13th, 12:00pm to Sunday, September 15th, 9:00am 

This year’s event will include:

  • community connection and learning
  • expert voices, including keynote Dr. Philip Stevens
  • a visit to Tohono O’odham Community College

This year, we’re also be hosting a pre-conference workshop covering the following topics:

  • OER adoption, adaptation, and development at TCUs
  • Collaborative Learning – Strategies and Tools to Facilitate Group Work in the TCU Context

2023 TCU-Carnegie Math Pathways Network Convening

We are excited to once again bring together our partner Tribal Colleges and Universities for a professional learning and community event centered on our joint work transforming mathematics teaching and learning to benefit Native students.

The event will feature:

  • opportunities to connect and rejuvenate connections across TCU campuses
  • opening and closing keynotes by Natalie Youngbull and Krystal Tsosie
  • professional learning and sharing around building a supportive class environment, alternative assessment, corequisite design and implementation, and more!

We’ll also be hosting a pre-conference training for new faculty preparing to teach Quantway and Statway and administrators new to the program.

Project Success TCU-Carnegie Math Pathways Network Convening

We are excited to gather in person with our partners at Tribal Colleges and Universities to celebrate our community’s accomplishments and the significant progress we’ve made toward creating more empowering math learning experiences for Native students.

The event will feature:

  • NEW: A learning session with Camillus Lopez, senior cultural mentor at Tohono O’odham Community College
  • An opening keynote with Dr. Michael Little Crow, lecturer in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Arizona State University
  • Community connection and celebration
  • Student voices
  • Learning opportunities around online instruction, corequisite implementation, alternative assessments, and more!

And don’t forget: Project Success will fund teams of three to attend.

Fall 2021 TCU-Carnegie Math Pathways Virtual Convening

Reconnect and re-energize with your colleagues at peer colleges during the TCU-Carnegie Math Pathways Virtual Convening!

This event marks the fourth anniversary of the launch of our TCU-Carnegie Math Pathways network in Minneapolis in the fall of 2017. The tradition continues at this year’s event with opportunities to:

  • Reunite with our community of colleagues across campuses
  • Learn about developments and best practices from across our network
  • Participate in an interactive open keynote for the Carnegie Math Pathways Network with Joe Feldman, educator and author of Grading for Equity (this session is open to non-math TCU faculty. Please encourage your colleagues in other disciplines to register for this free session.)

Who should participate? We welcome math faculty, administrators, and student support staff at Tribal Colleges and Universities to join us.

Grading for Equity
Friday, November 12

Facilitated by educators, Joe Feldman and Mark Boswell, this interactive session will walk you through a brief history of traditional grading, how the continued use of these practices negatively impact the learning process and undermine equity, and will offer linkages between improved grading and equity. The session will present a theory and framework for equitable grading, examples, and strategies to apply in your classrooms.

Joe Feldman is the author of Grading for Equity: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How It Can Transform Schools and Classrooms. Mark Boswell is a career educator and currently the Assistant Head of Upper School at Marin Country Day School.

This session is being made available free of charge and is being held during our annual Tribal Colleges and Universities Fall Convening. Attendees are eligible for a discounted price on the book, Grading For Equity. Because this topic is of value to all educators, we encourage you to invite your other math department colleagues to participate.

Dr. Jameson David LopezMoving Indigenous Statistics and Survey Research with Indigenous People

Description: When thinking about the limitations of the institutional and national datasets using Indigenous populations, researchers need to consider that most research designs do not adequately address methodological issues associated with small and unrepresentative samples of Natives. To truly understand the limitations of data in Indigenous communities and more justly represent them requires engaging Indigenous communities to address the complexities of Indigenous data. Exploring and evaluating current research that uses data with Indigenous communities, we’ll discuss how to create measures within the context of specific tribal communities that privilege community notions of being and knowing.
